Tarot card reading

Tarot reading as I practice it, is about the quest after spiritual and personal growth. I use it for the clarification of life patterns during times of inner turmoil or indecision.

Morgan Greer Deck

The Tarot is a guide on the path of personal and spiritual growth. The Tarot cards describe a journey, the journey of the Fool, the 0 card in the deck, the beginning and the end of the journey. We start our lives as the fool and hopefully journey to become the enlightened Fool. This guide on the journey is represented by 78 cards depicting archetypal images and symbols. These symbols offer clues to help us understand ourselves and the patterns in our lives.

"Patterns in my life?" you say. "What patterns?" Some recurring themes in your life are obvious, "I know that every time I do such and such this happens." Some patterns are a little more deeply buried. "I can't understand why this happens." Your subconscious mind holds the big pattern of what you wanted your life to look like. Your subconscious mind holds the rules and regulations of your life. "How can I talk to my subconscious mind?" There are a number of ways. Through meditation, dream work, hypnosis and Tarot, to name a few different ways. What is the language of our subconscious and unconscious mind? Pictures, symbol, metaphor. Your subconscious mind, as represented by the High Priestess card, holds the rules and regulations of your life. Do you know what is written on her scroll?

Dreaming is a prime example of this language in use. "Well," you say. "I dreamed about being on this white horse and we were charging up this mountain." Do you like horses? "No, they terrify me." How did you feel in the dream. "Terrified." So you were terrified on the back of a white horse charging up a mountain. What situation does this represent in your life? What pattern is your subconscious mind or unconscious mind trying to tell you about? What if that dream was given to someone who loved horses and felt that horses were all about freedom and joy and power? What would that say about a situation in their life?

Like dreams, Tarot cards are another way of speaking to your subconscious mind and hearing what your subconscious mind and unconscious mind have to say to you, what they want to show you to help you. The pictures and symbolism on the Tarot cards are like the scenes in your dreams. Tarot cards are also a way of hearing and speaking with your Higher Self and Soul.

A Tarot reading is a conversation between you (the conscious level of your mind), the subconscious level of your mind (where all the Rules are kept) and the unconscious level (where the connections between your different lifetimes are kept, among other things). The Tarot reader acts as an interpreter between the different levels of meaning that your subconscious and unconscious mind are trying to express to you. To put the language of words to the language of pictures.

To begin a Tarot reading, the querent (the person asking the question) shuffles or mixes the deck of Tarot cards while concentrating on their question. It is during this time that the querent's subconscious and unconscious mind start their participation in the conversation, that is by arranging the cards into the order needed to understand or explain the pattern being questioned. The reader then spreads the cards into a specific pattern for interpreting. I use a 5 card spread whose positions represent: you now, where you are coming from, what the journey is about, what is calling to you and what your place of self responsibility is.

When I read or interpret the images on the cards, I use a combination of understanding the images on the conscious level and also understanding them on a subconscious and unconscious level, that is, understanding them intuitively.

Just as there are many ways to interpret the pictures of your dreams there are also many ways to interpret the pictures of Tarot cards. There are many books written on what the meaning of each card is and not all of them agree with each other. How do I choose the most appropriate meaning for the client? By listening deeply. What words come to mind as the client and I sit together? What feels right? What visual clues do the cards give me about the situation? What stands out for me in the spread? What are the redundancies? If a card is upside down, reversed, is that because there is a block to that particular energy? Is it because its not time for that energy to move into the client's life? Or is it time for that energy to leave the client's life? I need to choose what feels right for each client.

Since this is a conversation and you are asking about an aspect of your life, it is important to have your input during the reading. My Tarot readings are done with you not to you. I have had clients, who with no previous knowledge of Tarot cards, look at a card as I am describing generally what the card means and tell me they know exactly what the card is telling them. I honor their intuition by having them tell me what the card is saying to them. Or sometimes a particular card will show up in response to a question and then after reshuffling the deck and asking another question it will show up again, sometimes in the same position as in the previous question. Out of a deck of 78 cards. Now how cool is that?
